We take a gravel road in the pine wood that includes a short hike-a-bike to climb to the volcanic plateau of Mt Teide. After a stretch of tarmac, we keep riding on gravel, the pine wood mixes with lava fields and black volcanic ashes. We finally make it to our accommodation, a cosy mountain hut on the slopes of magnificent Mt Teide.

After endless switchbacks winding down deep ravines we reach the charming village of Masca. We then climb in a laurel forest shrouded in the mist to reach the old town of Teno and a viewpoint overlooking the ocean. We can now choose to ride back to the hotel or go for an extra 4-hour loop to Teno Lighthouse.

We ride on fast double tracks on the slopes of Mt Teide, then climb on red gravel roads in a surreal volcanic landscape made of yellow stones and black ash. From there it’s a quick descent on a paved road to the hotel in La Laguna, a 15th-century colonial town declared UNESCO world heritage.

We leave town and ride the scenic roads of the Anaga Mountains in a lush green forest usually shrouded in the mist. A quiet road winds down to the small village of Taganaga and reaches the remote beach of Benijo, we stop for lunch and swim in the ocean. It’s a long climb to Mount Teide, a massive volcano rising at 3700 meters above the ocean. The climb mainly goes on hard-packed double tracks in the pine forest to reach the moon-like volcanic landscape of Cañadas above 2000 meters, another UNESCO World Heritage site. The route quickly descends on fast gravel roads to the hotel. It’s a long day, but we can take some shortcuts in the afternoon.
